“Mariposa” tells the story of two sisters bound by love and lifelong poverty. Alma, older sister, has devoted herself entirely to her younger sibling, quietly sacrificing her own future so her sister can pursue opportunities beyond their circumstances. Together, they scrape by collecting cans, an exhausting routine that reflects both their struggle and Alma’s unwavering determination.
As the younger sister begins to move toward a better life, Alma remains a constant presence, steadfast, selfless, and enduring. The film gently explores themes of sacrifice, survival, and
sisterhood, leaving the audience with a lingering sense that not all acts of love are seen, and not all sacrifices are fully understood.
